Three inches of snow, temperatures in the single digits, cold north wind, and a marathon of Christmas movies on the Hallmark channel… it’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas! You see how that worked? It was easy to skip over a time to give thanks. This next Thursday, Nov. 27 – has been designated as a day of Thanksgiving. The bible says in 1st Thessalonians 5:16-18; Be joyful always, pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”
How and to whom will you give thanks? Will you give thanks by giving time, food, energy, smiles, laughter and companionship to all whom the Lord will call for our annual Thanksgiving Dinner at Carey’s Café? Volunteers to work at various times and jobs are still needed – sign up soon. Will you give thanks by gathering with your family, some of whom you haven’t seen in ages, and spend the day remembering, laughing and praying as you share a meal and more importantly, time together?
How will you give thanks? Send a note, make a phone call, or post something on Facebook or Twitter… how will you give thanks? Here’s one we should all be sure to do… pray. Give thanks in prayer. Thank God for the simple and the sublime; for provision that comes just in time. Thank Him for struggle and the strength that arrives to lift us as upon an eagle’s wings. Thank Him for new life that has come and for the life that has been called home… both to be shared. There are so many ways to give thanks to the Lord… just do so in prayer. I’ll leave you with this prayer;
For each new morning with its light,
For rest and shelter of the night,
For health and food,
For love and friends,
For everything thy goodness sends.
Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803 – 1882)
