Somewhere along the line an engineer designed an anti-lock break system that allowed me to safely decelerate as much as possible, thus lessening the impact. My drivers education teacher along with other family members drilled into my psyche the safe driving mantra of “never veer for a deer” which kept the vehicle under control and out of the ditch. The sheriff’s office had the proper communication and availability to respond with a deputy in a timely manner. The list goes on... The church paid the insurance premiums on the van, the body shop has the right tools and training… all these things are in place… preparations have been made. As a result, the van will be fixed, life will move on and I’ll have a hankering for deer jerky.
Our path to maturity in Christ will have “deer hits.” We will have people, circumstances, temptations, and flat out moral failures that can derail our lives in Christ. Here is the key… Prepare. Fill your life with God’s word. Live in a state of constant prayer knowing that every word and thought can be, and is, a conversation with God. Be generous with your money, your time, and your possessions . (see Acts 2 and 4) Be devoted to fellowship with other believers. Invest into the lives of your neighbors. Be a friend to those who don’t know Christ. Look honestly at the person in mirror and accept the forgiveness Jesus gives you. Walk in the light. Walk in Spirit. In doing this you will be prepared; able to lesson the damage to life and continue to move forward and do the good works which God has already laid in place for you.
