Wish list stuck to the fridge, black Friday, cyber Monday, deck the halls, put up the tree, decorate the house, hide the mistletoe and hang the stockings with care… the season of Christmas is upon us. We begin to wonder what gift our “true love” might leave under the tree. According to an article posted at Forbes.com the PNC Christmas Price Index®, which measures the cost of buying one set of each of the gifts given in the song “The Twelve Days of Christmas,” has become quite pricey. You know the list: 12 Drummers Drumming, 11 Pipers Piping, 10 Lords-a-Leaping, 9 Ladies Dancing, 8 Maids a-Milking, 7 Swans-a-Swimming, 6 Geese-a-Laying, 5 Gold Rings, 4 Calling Birds, 3 French Hens, 2 Turtle Doves anddddd A Partridge in a Pear Tree.
If your true love shelled out enough to cover the costs of everything on the list this year, those 78 items would cost $27,393.17! I only have two words in response to this; “that’s crazy!”
Sadly, though – too many people tie their love to material gifts which will spoil and fade. During this time of advent – this time of expectation – and the celebration of God’s answer to man’s problem let us remember that true love cost so much that you can’t write a check big enough to cover it. True love cost everything. Jesus said; “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16 NIV) The Bible also says: “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 6:23 NIV) We have a valuable gift from our true love. A gift that has nothing to do with drums, geese or golden rings; it is a gift of GREAT value – the gift is His Son. “This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.” (1st John 4:9-11 NIV)
The gift of true love is eternal life with God the Father. The price of true love is everything.
