Community Thanksgiving Meal adjusts for COVID

The Annual Community Thanksgiving Meal has been an expected and well-received event in the community for over 20 years. For the last several years between 220–250 meals have been served each year at this event. In 2019 the event was moved to the First Church of Christ building where there was plenty of parking and seating. It was a big success for those who attended as well as those who volunteered. The members of the First Church of Christ realize that 2020 has been challenging for many events in the community. However, they all agree that not hosting this event was not an option. They are moving forward with the meal with a drive-through carry-out style of service to accommodate the current situation in our nation.

This year the Annual Community Thanksgiving Meal will once again be served at First Church of Christ located at 772 N. 2nd Street in Cherokee, Iowa. The church is nestled between the hotel and the hospital with the main entrance on the east side of North 2nd Street (HWY 59). Serving will begin at 11:00 a.m. and end at 1:30 p.m. This will be a drive-through carry-out meal. Simply pull up and tell them how many meals you would like, and the kind of pie you want, and members of the First Church of Christ will load you up with delicious hot meals. They are grateful to be able to serve the community in this way. Volunteers will also be appropriately attired in masks and gloves.

The meal is FREE and a free will offering will be available to those who wish to contribute. Any amount left over after expenses will be added to benevolence outreach funds. For individuals who are homebound, meals can be delivered. Please call the First Church of Christ office (712) 225-2667 by Wednesday, November 25th before 2 p.m. to get on the meal delivery list.

To promote a sense of community and fellowship we want to encourage as many people as possible to take advantage of this meal.  There will be plenty of food available. This is particularly true if you are away from family and friends. There are also plenty of opportunities open to volunteer with helping with the meal, whether it is serving or providing food. If this is of interest to you contact the First Church of Christ office or complete our Thanksgiving Meal Volunteer Sign-Up Form.

We are looking forward to once again serving the community with the Annual Community Thanksgiving meal at First Church of Christ in Cherokee. See you there!

At First Church of Christ, we are a body of believers who simply want to love one another, grow in our relationship with God and share His word with those around us.
