Weakness As Strength

In this culture of “MY, ME, MINE” where everything is all about ME, we can tend to go out of our way to always put our best foot forward. This can make it appear to those around us as if we are independent and self-sufficient. It seems almost inconceivable to think of or dwell on our weaknesses, much less boast about them!

Yet, this is the ability the Apostle Paul found in the grace of God given in Jesus Christ. Paul was a full-blooded citizen of Israel from the tribe of Benjamin. He was a well-educated Pharisee who trained at the feet of Gamaliel (cf. Acts 5:24-40) and was a noted teacher of the Mosaic law (cf. Philippians 3:4-8). To say he was quite accomplished would be an understatement!

And yet Paul realized his human nature often got in the way of living out God’s purpose in his life. He encouraged the church in Corinth and now also us, to look at our weaknesses and shortcomings honestly. Paul wants us to realize, as he did, that it is in the humility of our weakness that God can truly apply His power to our lives.

Looking for and finding that small reason for thanksgiving and evidence of grace when we are walking through a rough patch in life requires faith. To surrender our will to God’s is to know that He can calm our fear and anxiety on the inside while the world screams noise and chaos at us every day on the outside.

Sometimes God allows storms in our lives to get our focus off the things that have consumed our attention and back onto Him. While he may choose not to calm the storm physically that we must endure, he provides us a peace of heart, mind and spirit that assures us He is in control. It is difficult for us to slow down in a storm when all we want to do is run for some shelter and find some relief. We just want it to all go away so that we can have a normal life again.

Yet, with God’s peace we can reflect the love and power of Jesus Christ so that the world sees Him in how we spiritually and mentally process the storms in our lives. Boasting in our weaknesses is not as odd as it first sounded. I encourage you to give it a try. God does not want us to just boast with our voices but with our hearts and actions.

May we give the struggles of our storms to God in prayer, recognizing that we are incapable of calming life’s storms on our own. We need His help and in asking for it, we continue to live and work our way through the storm. It is the action of our faith while trudging and struggling through the storm in our weakest moments that allows God’s power to be seen by others in our daily lives.

May others see God’s grace on display in our lives today!

Blessings,
Pastor David
