When Have You Tried But Failed?

Have you ever given something your best shot, only to come up short? It’s a frustrating and often painful experience. Maybe you prepared for a promotion that went to someone else, trained for a race you didn’t finish, or tried to mend a relationship that remained broken. In those moments of failure, it’s easy to feel like your efforts were wasted and that you’ve let yourself and others down.

The apostle Peter understood this feeling well. In the book of Luke, Jesus tells him to lower his nets for a catch after a long, fruitless night of fishing. Peter, an experienced fisherman, replied, “Master, we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything.” He had tried and failed. Yet, he followed with a statement of faith: “But because you say so, I will let down the nets.” When he did, he caught so many fish that his nets began to break.

This story teaches us a powerful lesson. Our human effort, no matter how skilled or determined, has its limits. We can plan, practice, and push ourselves, but sometimes the results we want are beyond our control. It’s in these moments of perceived failure that God invites us to rely on His power, not our own. Peter’s obedience, despite his exhaustion and previous failure, opened the door to a miracle.

When you feel you’ve tried and failed, don’t lose hope. See it as an opportunity to turn to God and say, “I’ve done all I can. Now, I will trust in You.”

Blessings,
Pastor David
